YPBMF discusses ‘In Their Own Words’ with The Relational Social Work Podcast

‘In Their Own Words’ returned for its 2025 edition earlier this month. Alongside the insightful conversations on stage, some members of Young People’s Benchmarking Forum (YPBMF) also engaged in insightful conversations off the stage. Behind the scenes, they joined The Relational Social Work Podcast to share their thoughts on the significance of ‘In Their Own Words’.

Just in case you haven’t come across The Relational Social Work Podcast already (please go and check it out!), it’s aimed at child and family social workers and reiterates the importance of connection and relationships in this area.

YPBMF Legends Harlie, Victoria, Dyllan, and Mark joined the hosts, Hannah and Matt, to discuss the event and accompanying reports (which are informed by over 200 care experienced young people). Both the event and reports highlight what matters most to care experienced individuals with this year’s key topics being: Cost of Living, Health and Mental Health, Communities of Support, Safe and Affordable Accommodation, and Support Post 21 & 25.

One of the overarching messages that came out of this year’s ‘In Their Own Words’ was that not one size fits all. When it comes to supporting those with care experience, the message is clear – more tailored support is needed. The reports also highlighted calls for greater support in aspects such as setting up a home (rather than just a house), affording public transport, and managing mental health.

Thank you very much to Hannah, Matt, and all at The Relational Social Work Podcast for having Harlie, Victoria, Dyllan, and Mark, and for giving YPBMF a platform to further amplify its voice.

If you’d like to catch up with the podcast, it’s available now on The Relational Social Work Podcast website; it’s also on all major podcast platforms including Spotify, Amazon Music, and Apple Podcasts.
