New Report Launches: Mapping Support for Care-Experienced Young People in Custody

We are proud to announce the launch of our new report, “Mapping Support for Care-Experienced Young People in Custody.” Prepared and presented by Jayne Tanti, Care Leaver Criminal Justice Lead.

This report is the direct result of our recent survey and interviews. Professionals from across the Police, Prisons and Probation, local authorities, and the third sector, alongside those with lived experience, shared their expertise to help us capture a true picture of current support and amplify the voices of care-experienced young people, including the YPBMF.

What the Research Revealed

This report captures a national snapshot of how care-experienced young people are supported in custody and at risk. It highlights what’s working, where gaps remain and what needs to change.

  • Inconsistent identification across systems
  • Support dependent on location, not need
  • Strong practice exists, but is not embedded
  • Trauma-informed approaches make a difference

A Roadmap for Local Authorities and Partners

This report does more than just highlight problems; it provides the evidence needed to push for better practice. It serves as a tool for local authorities, youth justice teams, and policy-makers to work together to ensure that care-experienced young people are never “lost” in the system.
